Hadiths related to Nikah and Reception (Walima)



Hadith No. 1 (Choose the best mate for yourself)

It was narrated from 'Aishah:
that the Messenger of Allah said: "Choose the best for your sperm, and marry compatible women and propose marriage to them."' (Da'if)

Hadith No. 2 (Nikah not valid without a Guradian-Wali)

It was narrated that:
Aisha and Ibn Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah said: 'There is no marriage except with a guardian”According to the Hadith of Aishah: “And the ruler is the guardian of the one who does not have a guardian. ” (Sahih)

Hadith No. 3 (Nikah of Previously married / Virgin)

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:
The Prophet (pbuh) said: A guardian has no concern with a woman previously married and has no husband, and an orphan girl (i.e. virgin) must be consulted, her silence being her acceptance.

Hadith No. 4 (Mahr - Dowry by newly wedded husband)

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:
The Prophet (pbuh) said to a man, "Marry, even with (a Mahr equal to) an iron ring."

Hadith No. 5 (Walima - Reception given by newly wedded husband / Mahr) 

Narrated Anas:
The Prophet (pbuh) saw the traces of Sufra (yellow perfume) on `Abdur-Rahman bin `Auf and said, "What is this?" `Abdur-Rahman, said, "I have married a woman and have paid gold equal to the weight of a datestone (as her Mahr). The Prophet (pbuh) said to him, "May Allah bless you: Offer a wedding banquet even with one sheep."

Aishah narrated that:
The Messenger of Allah said: "Publicize this marriage, and hold it in the Masjid, and beat the Duff for it." (Da'if)

Hadith No. 7 (Quranic knowledge can be Mahr / Permissible to look at the woman before marriage)

Narrated Sahl bin Sa`d:
A woman came to Allah's Messenger (pbuh) and said, "O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! I have come to you to present myself to you (for marriage)." Allah's Messenger (pbuh) glanced at her. He looked at her carefully and fixed his glance on her and then lowered his head. When the lady saw that he did not say anything, she sat down. A man from his companions got up and said, "O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! If you are not in need of her, then marry her to me." The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Have you got anything to offer." The man said, 'No, by Allah, O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)!" The Prophet (pbuh) said (to him), "Go to your family and try to find something." So the man went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! I have not found anything." The Prophet said, "Go again and look for something, even if it were an iron ring." He went and returned, saying, "No, by Allah, O Allah's Messenger (pbuh)! I could not find even an iron ring, but this is my Izar (waist sheet).' He had no Rida (upper garment). He added, "I give half of it to her." Allah's Messenger (pbuh) said "What will she do with your Izar? If you wear it, she will have nothing over herself thereof (will be naked); and if she wears it, then you will have nothing over yourself thereof ' So the man sat for a long period and then got up (to leave). When Allah's Messenger (pbuh) saw him leaving, he ordered that he called back. When he came, the Prophet (pbuh) asked (him), "How much of the Qur'an do you know (by heart)?" The man replied, I know such Sura and such Sura and such Sura," naming the suras. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Can you recite it by heart?" He said, 'Yes." The Prophet (pbuh) said, "Go I let you marry her for what you know of the Qur'an (as her Mahr).

Hadith No. 8 (Not asking a woman to marry when someone else has already asked for it)

Yahya related to me from Malik from Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Habban from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Do not ask for a woman in marriage when another muslim has already done so."

Hadith No. 9 (Man can propose a woman for marriage)

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Buraidah: It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Buraidah that his father said: "Abu Bakr and 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, proposed marriage to Fatimah but the Messenger of Allah said: 'She is young.' Then 'Ali proposed marriage to her and he married her to him."

Hadith No. 10 (Man should see a woman before marriage)

Narrated Abu Hurairah: It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "A man proposed to a woman from among the Ansar and the Messenger of Allah said to him: 'Have you seen her?' He said: 'No.' So he told him to look at her."

Hadith No. 11 (Marrying Virgins)

Jabir bin ‘Abd Allah said “The Apostle of Allaah(pbuh) said to me “Did you marry?” I said “Yes”. He again said “Virgin or Non Virgin (woman previously married)?” I said “Non Virgin”. He said “Why (did you) not (marry) a virgin with whom you could sport and she could sport with you.

Hadith No. 11 (Women Whom It Is Disliked To Combine Between (In Marriage))

Al Miswar bin Makramah said that he heard the Apostle of Allaah() say on the pulpit Banu Hashim bin Al Mughirah sought permission from me to marry their daughter to ‘Ali bin Abi Talib. But I do not permit, again, I do not permit, again, I do not permit except that Ibn Abi Talib divorces my daughter and marries their daughter. My daughter is my part, what makes her uneasy makes me uneasy and what troubles her troubles me.

Hadith No. 12 (Curse on woman who disobey their husband)

Messenger of Allah (pbuh) delivered a Khtubah in which he exhorted them, then he said: "O women! Give charity for you are the majority of the people of the Fire." A woman among them said: "And why is that O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Because of your cursing so much." - meaning your ungratefulness towards your husbands. He said: "And I have not seen any among those lacking in intellect and religion who are more difficult upon people possessing reason and insight than you." A woman among them said: "And what is the deficiency of her intellect and religion?" He said: "The testimony of two women among you is like the testimony of a man, and the deficiency in your religion is menstruation, because one of you will go three or four days without performing Salat."
